Ceramic Coating Process
Here’s an example of our ceramic coating process for a vehicle thats been driven a bit. Every job is customized because not every car is the same. if you park under a tree and your car is loaded with sap, that is going to be different than an Escalade that you just rolled off the lot. So please get in touch with me via text at 331-222-2235 to talk about your customized ceramic coating plan and price.
- Initial Wash:
- Rinse the car thoroughly to remove loose dirt and debris.
- Use a pH-neutral car shampoo with a two-bucket wash method (one bucket with soap, one with clean water) and a microfiber mitt to avoid scratching.
- Clean wheels and tires with a dedicated cleaner to remove brake dust and grime.
- Decontamination:
- Chemical Decontamination: Spray an iron fallout remover (e.g., Iron-X) on the paint, wheels, and glass to dissolve bonded iron particles. Let it dwell, then rinse off.
- Mechanical Decontamination: Use a clay bar with a lubricant (e.g., quick detailer or clay lube) to remove tar, tree sap, and other contaminants from the paint, ensuring a smooth surface.
- Surface Inspection:
- Check for scratches, swirl marks, or oxidation. A two-year-old car may have minor imperfections, especially if regularly driven or parked outdoors.
- If the paint feels rough after claying or shows visible defects, proceed to polishing.
- Polishing (if needed):
- Use a dual-action (DA) polisher with appropriate pads and a mild to medium-cut polish to remove light scratches, swirls, or oxidation.
- Work in small sections, applying light pressure, and wipe off residue with a microfiber towel.
- For severe defects, consider professional correction or a more aggressive compound, but be cautious not to remove too much clear coat.
- Cleaning and Drying:
- Wash the car again with pH-neutral shampoo to remove polishing oils and residue.
- Dry thoroughly with microfiber drying towels or a blower to prevent water spots.
- Surface Prep:
- Wipe down the car with an isopropyl alcohol (IPA) solution (e.g., 70% IPA mixed with water) or a dedicated panel prep spray (e.g., Gtechniq Panel Wipe) using a microfiber towel to remove any remaining oils, waxes, or sealants. This ensures the ceramic coating bonds properly to the paint.
- Additional Considerations:
- Trim and Glass: Mask off plastic trim, rubber, and non-painted surfaces to avoid coating residue, or use a ceramic coating specifically designed for trim/glass if you plan to coat those areas.
- Environment: Work in a shaded area or garage to avoid large contaminants, direct sunlight, or moisture during application.
- Tools and Supplies: Ensure you have microfiber towels, applicator pads, gloves, and the ceramic coating product ready. Read the coating’s instructions for specific prep or curing requirements.
- Optional Pre-Coating Steps:
- If the car has existing wax or sealant, use a wax-stripping shampoo or a stronger cleaner during the initial wash.
- For neglected paint, consider a multi-stage polish (compound, polish, then finishing polish) to restore gloss before coating.
